Play Ball!

The Hold Steady recorded a version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," with some Twins flavor. Apparently, Kevin Dutcher, the Twins' musical director, asked the band to record it, and he played it over the PA opening night. The Hold Steady has grown on me like crazy- at first I had problems with Craig Finn's vocal style, but once you see them live, it all seems to make sense. I'm quite psyched to see them at Sasquatch. That being said, I think this song is pretty weak, even with all the Twinkie references.

Though I very well may be murdered for writing this (by a few select friends,) every song by The Hold Steady sounds like this to me. FYI, you have been on a damn roll with your posts. Keep up the good work, good sir.

The funny thing is, every time I listen to this song (4 times now), it annoys me less. Pretty soon, I'll be telling you I love this version. This is how The Hold Steady works- they grow on me like a benevolent fungus. Trevor, I think you've inspired me to write a post all about this band, with some more audio. I do think that seeing them live is essential to the process, though- Craig Finn is a very charismatic, sincere dude. 2005's Separation Sunday is a classic concept album, all about growing up Catholic (and partying quite a bit) in the Twin Cities.
