Go Gophers!
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers hockey team will face off against Air Force Saturday afternoon, in the first round of the NCAA hockey tournament. I haven't watched a lot of games this year (not having cable makes it a little difficult), but the Gophers are always fun to root for, especially in the postseason. I missed Blake Wheeler's incredible goal in OT to win the WCHA tournament, but thanks to YouTube, here it is:
The incredible thing about this goal (in addition to the fact that he was really just trying to prevent icing, and ended up winning the game with a desperate swipe of his stick), is that it's nearly the same goal that Neal Broten scored for the Gophers in the 1979 NCAA Championship game. Although, Broten's wasn't done backhanded:
But neither of these goals are as cool as the one Ryan Okposo scored in December. First, you've got the killer no-look pass to him. Then, as he's skating in front of the goal, he brings the puck back between his legs, and flips it up over the goalie's glove- with his stick between his legs! Check this out:
