Back from Sasquatch/Portland
Got back late last night. I'll be posting a whole ton of pictures, some video, and thoughts about the festival, as soon as I get a chance. In the meantime, here are some random observations:
- I'm not a fan of wind. Not a fan of biking or running in it, I'm not a sailor, and I certainly don't enjoy attending music festivals that are postponed for three hours because of it! (Not to mention broken tent poles.)
- Manu Chao is the shit. There's a reason he's considered a superstar in many parts of the world.
- What's with the two-person band craze? I'm sure the White Stripes have something to do with it. Two Gallants, Viva Voce, Ghostland Observatory, Helio Sequence, The Blow, and Smoosh were all duets. Actually, I read that Smoosh performed as a trio, with 10-year-old Maia joining sisters Chloe (13) and Asya (15). I didn't have the pleasure of watching the Seattle group perform, since I couldn't sell anyone on seeing a "female version of Hanson," and I didn't want to go over to the stage by myself out of fear of looking like a sex offender.
- I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. Especially when you're stuck inside the venue from noon until after midnight, and forced to live off of whatever overpriced crap they're selling inside. We learned after the first day, though, and brought in a ton of food (and some cleverly hidden vodka and bourbon) for day #2.
- It was very strange to be at a festival with no jambands or bluegrass represented. Especially because I'm so used to musicians jamming together. There was absolutely none of that! Except for a couple percussion guys who played with a few bands.
